How to fake tan (streakless, stainless, sunless!)

Everybody should love the skin they're in. But sometimes we just want a little extra glow, am I right?

Thankfully, fake tan is the healthy alternative to sunbathing and sunbeds (a definite no-no if you care about your skin!). Fake tan can be a little tricky to get the hang of, though. Here are some tips on how to fake tan and get a streakless, strainless and sunless glow every time.

Get your skin in good condition

If you're thinking of trying fake tan, get your skin in good health first. Dry patches – on your elbows and knees, for example – will soak up more colour and make your tan look uneven. So you should use a deep moisturiser on your skin for a few days before tanning.

Exfoliate, exfoliate, exfoliate

The smoother your skin, the smoother your fake tan will look. Do any necessary shaving, then gently rub your skin with an exfoliating scrub and a loofah, brush or mitt. If you're doing this the day before tanning, you can apply moisturiser after. If you're short on time, apply fake tan straight after this step.

Start clean

Make sure your skin is completely clean before you apply fake tan. Any moisturisers, body oils and even perfumes and deodorants will affect your application.

Use a mitt

To achieve a seamless, streakless tan, your best bet is to use a tanning mitt. Start with a small amount of tan and buff it into the skin with a dry mitt until it is fully blended. This will also prevent orange hands!

Layer up

It's easier to apply another layer of tan than it is to take a layer off. Experiment with how much warmth you want to add to your skin by applying in thin layers. And remember that the colour will continue to deepen and develop after application.

Don't forget your face

Give some extra attention to your face so you don't end up looking like a floating head. Many tan formulas are safe for your face as well as your body – just remember to use a light touch.

Choose a quick-dry formula

The best thing ever is going to sleep with a fresh tan and waking up beautifully golden. The worst thing ever is stained sheets. To prevent this, choose a quick-drying tan formula. Now you can sleep easy and let your tan get gorgeous overnight.
