You can’t go past the famous sun-safe saying: Slip, Slop, Slap, Seek and Slide.
If you’re not Aussie, or just need a refresher, Slip-Slop-Slap was a campaign launched by Cancer Council, encouraging Australians to “Slip on a Shirt, Slop on Sunscreen, Slap on a Hat”. It was recently extended to include “Seek shade or shelter, Slide on sunglasses”.
While sun safety is important all year round, the skin cancer awareness message is especially important during summer. Did you know that 1 in 8 Aussies are sunburnt on an average summer weekend?! Here’s how to stay sun-safe (and look gorgeous doing it).
1. SLIP on a stylish cover-up
Gone are the days where you had to swathe yourself in towels just to enjoy a sun-safe day at the beach. Choose a lightweight cover-up to throw over your cossies. Add a fun pair of heels and you can go straight from the beach to the bar.
2. SLOP on 50+ sunscreen
Please don’t underestimate the severity of the Australian sun – harmful UV radiation can’t be felt or seen, even if it’s not particularly hot. Regardless of your skin tone, it’s better to be safe than sorry and invest in a great quality SPF 50+ sunscreen.
3. SLAP on a wide-brim hat
When it comes to hats, the bigger the better. As a bonus, a big floppy hat instantly makes you a hundred times more glamorous (it’s a scientific fact).
4. SEEK a beach umbrella
It’s much easier to take shelter if it’s portable! We are obsessed with this beach umbrella – not only is it beautiful and lightweight, but the UPF 50+ fabric is also made from recycled plastic bottles!
5. SLIDE on statement sunnies
Just like hats, the same rule applies – sunglasses instantly make you more chic and “put-together”. Not all sunnies are created equal, so look for ones with 100# UV protection.
